Three Chocolate Puppies

July 2006:  Riverhead Vet Emergency called the LILRR coordinator regarding three 8 week old chocolate, female Lab pups...  apparently, two friends saw a "Lab Pups For Sale" advertisement and went to look at them with no intent to buy (too soon after her beloved Lab walked to 'The Bridge').  At the breeder's home, they encountered filth, squalor and three unsold Lab pups ... each was emaciated with extreme hair loss and body covered with oozing open sores.  The two smaller pups - breeder claimed to be 'runts' - were clearly in pain and peril and needed immediate medical care.  In synopsis, the friends purchased all 3 pups, alerted SPCA to the situation, and rushed pups to Vet Emergency for life-saving treatment.  During the week of tests and treatment, ER staff contacted LILRR, explained the sad situation and asked LILRR to accept the pups once determined stable and non-contagious - on July 26th, the 3 pups entered LILRR foster...

July 26, 2006 - Photos, taken leaving Vet ER, show their starved, sore-ridden bodies.  Two are half size as their sister and all 3 are size of 4 week old pups ... the tiniest female can be cradled in adult palm!

Immediately placed on healthy diet and daily grooming with medicated bath, LILRR is determined to relieve their pain, suffering and restore their health.  The emaciation and skin condition of the tiniest pup is most pitiful (sad enough to bring tears to groomer)...

All 3 adorable pups show remarkable improvement after 2 weeks in LILRR foster...

Three weeks on a nutritional diet and daily medicated baths, the skin/coat of the large and middle female are healthy and beautiful and the tiny one is almost perfect, too.  They are healthy enough for first set of shots!   Being proverbial water dogs, the daily bath ritual has removed any reservation for water play ... they love to splash and swim!  Bath tub being too high for them to climb in or out, a Rubbermaid storage tub became their play pool (photo: lighter spots on their coat and deck are sun rays thru shade of overhead trellis vine)...

All 3 send big thankful wags & kisses to their saviors, "Aunts Alicia & Marylou"!!!
