Casper entered LILRR & known by nickname "Thaddeus"

- Rescue Bulletin -

Picked up stray with no collar, ID, tattoo or microchip.  All alone to fend for himself during ice & snow storms on dangerous city streets,  Casper was found huddled on an old dirty mattress near the train tracks.  This sweet pup suffers old and painful leg injuries, a broken ankle, and hip damage; the leg and paw are severely atrophied.  Casper needs corrective and reconstructive surgeries, and will require special and physical therapies.

Hock Surgery Success!

July 1999

"Tarsocrural Arthrodesis" surgery consists of boring holes through the damaged joint and implanting stainless steel pins; the pins protrude slightly out of the bone and secured using stainless wire. Bone grafted from his left front shoulder replaced cartilage removed from between that joint and the next - these bones will fuse together.  This complicated surgery will prevent Casper suffering further pain from that injury and circumvent otherwise early onset of debilitating arthritis that would occur if ignored - he is far too young to live a life of constant pain, crippling arthritis and face daily pain medication - when there was a viable corrective option.  Casper retains complete sensation  throughout the limb; all joints are mobile except for that ONE fused, which will give him a stiffer sort of gait.
The Cornell University orthopedic team's timely reaction saved his life when Casper ran into trouble awakening from anesthesia - he required an emergency endoscopy to flush the esophagus.  Casper was in excellent hands -  his hock surgery was performed by the same orthopedic surgeon that performed Heart's dual hip surgeries!  Casper, back in LILRR foster care, faces at least four months of very controlled rehabilitation.
