FAQ
Do you require my yard be fenced?
Absolutely!! Too many Labs were rescued from the pound after being caught by animal control as they strayed streets after bolting through opening/closing doors and unfenced yards. Many Labs are given away by owners unable to keep the furr kid within their unfenced (or inadequately fenced) yard. Every one of our rescued Labs have been jeopardized too many times already!
LILRR requires the home (primary and weekend or summer residences) be fenced "Labrador safe". Fencing structured for another breed or another pet may not safely restrain a Labrador Retriever. If the Lab is less than 12 years old, the fence must be electronic and/or conventional not less than 4 feet high.
If children are part of the household or regularly visit, increased safety features will be necessary at gates and home entrances such as garage, front and side doors. If lawn care, in-laws, friends or meter-readers have random access through gates, additional security features will be necessary to ascertain the gate is not opened when the Lab is in yard off leash or left unlatched.
Dog safe fencing permits off-leash play, exercise and the ability to safely join family activity. Dog safe fencing prevents the dog from bolting into the street when they see persons, rabbits, squirrels, cats and other dogs passing.
Until you are sure your existing fence is acceptable, do not submit an application.
(excerpts from "Adoption Information"):
LILRR advocates responsible dog stewardship (ownership) to include providing a safe home environment for the four legged family members. Of course there are risks in life -- but we don't go through the great effort of saving a dog's life just to place it in immediate jeopardy. Foresight to assure the home and yard is a safe haven for the Labrador is a priority responsibility. Fencing is less expensive than most emergency surgeries to save a maimed pet -- resetting broken bones can cost $1,500.00 and more. Conventional fencing and/or Invisible Fence provide a safer boundary for the pet and much peace of mind for the family.
If you have done your homework, thought this decision through, have established dog safe premises, agreement of all household members, and are ready to pursue an adoption, carefully review the Adoption Agreement and click on Adoption Application to continue.
