Adopter's update:

My husband and I adopted our first dog, a yellow Lab, from a local animal shelter in January, 1989. Buddy was approximately five years old at the time. He sold us forever on Labrador Retrievers and also reaffirmed our decision to adopt an adult dog. Buddy was wonderful; a typical Lab. We were very lucky to have him for over nine years, but finally, in August 1998, we had no other choice but to give Buddy the peace he deserved after old age ailments had so reduced his quality of life.

Heartbroken, and lonely without a dog, my husband turned to the internet and found a Lab Rescue Club in New York. The club was LILRR.  At the same time, I was searching the local newspaper for Labs needing adoption and came upon an ad that interested me. Coincidentally, the ad brought me to LILRR! Carlos requested an application, we filled it out, and within a week, we were on the phone with LILRR to make an appointment for our visit.

To make a short story shorter, we soon became the proud parents of our lovely and sweet Samantha, a black Labrador Retriever. Samantha became ours on September 4, 1998, my husband's birthday. It is a birthday neither of us will ever forget, and without a doubt, the best gift Carlos received.  Samantha is smart, loving, sweet, gentle and playful. She is everything we could hope for in a dog and more. She has reaffirmed, as Buddy did before her, that adopting an adult dog from a rescue organization is the way to go. Anyone reading this may already know how wonderful Labs are; it’s in their genes.  Already housebroken as most adult dogs are, and smart, as all Labs are, it was only a matter of days before Samantha was fully adjusted to our home and lifestyle. Knowing that Samantha had a life before us, we were concerned with her adjustment to us. Our fears were unfounded. She recognized us as her "parents" very quickly. She greets us with more enthusiasm than we could have imagined and loves to kiss us and cuddle. Samantha’s vibrant personality and love of playing keep us laughing and her affectionate nature warms the heart of everyone she meets.  Samantha turned five years old on January 1, 1999 and we hope to enjoy her and love her for many years to come. Thanks LILRR, for all your help and good advise, and for being there in our time of need. But thanks mostly for Samantha, aka "Princess Sammy."
