Special Labradors

LILRR currently fosters at least ten adult Labrador Retrievers rescued from municipal shelters, busted puppy mills, owners unable or unwilling to keep their Lab, and breeders unable or unwilling to assist their offspring.  LILRR Labs are lovingly cared for within the private homes of experienced (foster) volunteers for six to eight weeks during which time they  receive full vetting, are neutered, brought up to date on shots, assessed and rehabilitated to determine appropriate placement.  Labs can remain in foster care much longer when they have special needs.

The majority of our rescued Labs are in excellent general health with basic veterinary needs [neuter/spay and shots].  Labs, however, do enter Rescue having visually undetectable illnesses or health problems:  mysterious bacterial infection eating inside out; life threatening lower respiratory infection; pups weighing four pounds at six weeks of age, born without immunization protection, dying from various blood diseases and infections - and injuries: feet missing toes; bullets and pellets lodged in bones; puppy size choke chain embedded around throat of adult; severed muscles of both ears at skull; 4 prong fish hook through palate projecting out nostril; cruciate ligaments severed in both legs.  LILRR secured their health and medical needs, provided rehab and sequestered responsible adoptions.

LILRR does not recognize euthanization as an alternative to medical problems diagnosed humanely correctable to restore quality of life to the otherwise well dog.  Extensive fund raising efforts, commenced when Hampton, then Cherokee entered rescue, became much more intense with the rescue of "Heart" ... but the never ending story continues.

For the sake of these and other abandoned Labs needing assistance, we ask your help.  If a Veterinarian donates services to help just one, that will benefit at least two Labs: making the one adoptable which creates foster space needed to save another [sadly, there is always another].  If someone donates money or other necessary services, that can help to save another Lab's life.
